Ella & Sienna - Making waves on the Aussie Music Scene

I recently caught up with sister-duo Ella & Sienna and threw a few questions at 'em about what makes the cogs turn in their on-going pursuit to win audiences over with their catchy-melodic country-pop. The girls have already ventured to the USA and looking like another trip hopefully in the not too distant future so they can build their fan-base and tell everyone they're from Adelaide!

Ella & Sienna, appreciate you chatting to That Adelaide Band! I’d like to know what led you to appearing on the Voice and what did you take away from that experience?

We started watching The Voice from a very young age as we loved singing around the house as kids. We’d always joke about auditioning for the show and how crazy it would be if we did but we never actually considered it until the year we applied. At that time we were doing local gigs around Adelaide and had been busking for a few years prior. By this stage we felt that we had a bit of performance experience but we really wanted to take our music to the next level and be able to reach a bigger audience. We thought that The Voice would be a great platform to be able to do this and being part of the production seemed like an awesome experience. Our biggest takeaway from appearing on the show was to take every opportunity that comes our way. We honestly had no expectations going into the filming and we ended up getting a lot further than we’d ever imagined. So we’ll always opt for challenges and take every opportunity because of this.

Since the Voice, your releases are becoming quite prolific, do you see yourselves releasing music regularly and how to do you plan to do that?

We have released several songs since The Voice now, so we are starting to build our profile on all the music platforms which is really exciting. At the moment our focus with recording is on experimenting and finding our style/niche in the industry. Our debut EP featured songs that we’d written dating back to almost 6 years ago so we are really eager to be coming up with new tracks to be released in the very near future. We’ve actually lined up a few new songs that we are super proud of to be dropping in 2024. We are definitely working towards regular releases following this, so our main plan is to keep creative in our songwriting and work with different artists to come up with new material.

Your current song-writing strategy seems to lean towards country-tinged pop but I can also hear you going in other directions, potentially? Are there other types of musical genres that interest you?

We have found a lot of success within the country music industry so far and growing up listening to a lot of early Taylor Swift we love that genre of music so this seemed to influence a lot of our EP. We don’t like to put any labels or set boundaries on what we write so a lot of the time it doesn’t have one particular genre or style that it clearly fits into. In saying that, pop music is probably our most listened to genre and we look up to artists like Maisie Peters and Holly Humberstone who are incredible songwriters performing in that style. So in terms of direction with these next tracks that are to be released we are leaning more towards that sound.

What do you enjoy about being a musician in Adelaide and what advice would you give other artists wanting to get out, play shows and release original music?

One of the best things about Adelaide is that the music community is very close knit and supportive of emerging artists. There are so many venues that are willing to take on up-and-coming musicians which really helped us when we started out. There are also people with lots of experience in the industry that have generously shared their knowledge with us. Some advice we would give other artists would be to take initiative and make those contacts. Reaching out to local venues and other musicians always creates opportunities and we’ve experienced this firsthand. Putting yourself out there always leads to greater things and this is what has supported us most in building our profile. In terms of original music, the most important thing is to write A LOT of songs. In order to find your own sound and improve your craft you need to practice and experiment. The first song you write is nearly always horrible, but the more you write the better it becomes and the more confident you become in yourself.

I think Ella & Sienna would do very well in the USA, is this a potential goal? Give is a bit of a snapshot on what you visualize for the future and how do you plan to do it?

Reaching the market in the USA is definitely a future goal for us. After visiting Nashville earlier this past year we were really given a taste of the music industry on a wider scale. We met a lot of really talented people that we are eager to work with, so America is definitely a side of the industry we are wanting to explore. We are not exactly sure what’s to come in the future but we do know that we want to be recording and releasing more music, maybe a couple of albums, and be able to tour different parts of the world. Reaching new audiences and making connections with people is a big part of making this happen so we are excited to keep making music and building our career.
