A Dainty chat..
Adelaide band the Dainty Morsels have brought a refreshing perspective to the local music scene with their unique blend of blues, psych & indie sounds. Immediately they've captured the attention of local radio station Three D Radio and more punters are flocking to their shows to see what the commotion is all about. I caught up with the band to get inside their way of thinking around song-writing and what they have in store for us moving forward...
Tell me about the song-writing process with the Dainty Morsels, how do your songs start and how do they end? And what was the quickest song to write on the album?
Our process varies! But always involves just jammin’ it out in some capacity. Generally one of us will have an idea of some sort & then we’ll all layer on our ideas for our parts and jam it out until it feels whole.
Its hard to say which song was the quickest to write, they all tend to come together fairly fast. Don’t Stray was definitely quick though. We started jamming off of Jarods guitar part for that one and ended up playing through the whole song on that first jam (with the help of Emil yelling out the chord changes he was coming up with). The lyrics just appeared in that play through as well!
Where do you get your bluesy-psych-rock influences from? For me the Dainty Morsels seem to have quite a retro-feel like you’ve been transported from the 60’s playing shows at the Whiskey ‘a Go Go to Adelaide(Where LA’s loss is SA’s gain)
We all like a lot of music from varying eras & genres. Our individual music tastes are all pretty different but with a lot of crossovers. We all love blues & we love have a common love for a lot of variations of rock. We all listen to a pretty wide spread - but definitely a lot of older stuff.
Do you feel there is enough opportunity for The Dainty Morsels in Adelaide or are you working at going abroad to widen your musical wings and take your music to ears that otherwise wouldn’t have heard of you?
We would all rather fancy spending some time in Europe. We all want to see the world & would love to be able to do it together as a band. We’re trying to line up some more touring within Australia at the moment so some new faces can find us.
But we love Adelaide & are grateful to be here. We’d really love to be able to return the favour to the venues here that have done a lot for us, one day!
What’s your vision for the Dainty Morsels and what message are you putting out to the planet?
Thats a tough one! We just want to keep making stuff together and experience as much as we can through the band. As far as a message, maybe Power To The Produce.
I see The Dainty Morsels as a festival band – Your blues-rock vibe is totally set up for those before dusk festival slots where the crowd is all boozy and ready to boogie! What would be your ideal festival to play and why?
Maybe Isle of Wight & Montreux Jazz Festival. Emil says Stevie Ray Vaughan played some legendary sets at Montreux. And Isle of Wight is just iconic!
