The Superjesus interview - Adelaide's riff maestro's!

I first heard about the Superjesus when I was listening to Three D Radio one day back in the 90's and they played a demo version of 'I'm stained'. Immediately it caught my attention with it's huge riffs, big drums and Sarah Mcleod's undeniable vocal presence. The Superjesus then played the Adelaide Big Day Out(which was great) and then I went along to the former 'Madlove Bar' for their 'Shut my Eyes' EP launch. Was smashing a Balfours pie whilst re-fiancing my mortagage to pay for a Frog Cake and ran into Stuey Rudd(bass and co-founder) - Had a yarn!

I've been a big fan of the Superjesus ever since I saw you perform at Madlove Inc, with Cyren!(There's a cool memory) The Adelaide music scene was very different in the 90's, tell us your thoughts on that particular time and the vibe you felt playing the venues associated with it.

The Adelaide music scene was incredible at the time during the 90's . There was a lot of music around, and one of the things that struck me most was the comradery around the east end of Adelaide. Rundle street / East end all had bands playing just about every single night, so you could walk along and see 4 bands a night if you wish. It was also the same down Hindley street, and that side of town, although a little more competitive. I loved all the venues we played, from the Tivoili, Exeter, Austral, Cranker, Synagogue ,Mad love etc etc. It was just as much a social scene as it was support for Aus Music, and Adelaide music.

What is the best show you have been involved in with the Superjesus, mate you we all know you have played some epic shows from Kiss to Bush, staples at the Big Day Out's, a spot in 'Garage Days' movie etc and performing at the ARIA Awards - There must be one 'pinch yourself moment' that stands out..

Oh my god! I loved KISS growing up, and was a major influence in me playing music, so that was a wtf moment, but that came later. Early on playing with BUSH on a national tour was incredible for us, and gave us so much exposure thorough Ent centres, and if you thought you were doing ok , at the end of that tour around the country Gavin Rossdale said to me after the last show in catering .... "where have I seen you before"! Lol I understand. Perhaps ARIA awards playing live. At that time they refused to have bands go live on air, but we insisted and with just enough stupidity/ bravado we played live in front of an audience filled with crowded house, Silverchair , you am I , Midnight Oil and the list went on...... pinch me now!

Being such a long-standing musician in Adelaide what is great about the Adelaide music scene you have observed? I notice you try and book Adelaide bands to support The Superjesus.. It's very cool!

Well I love Adelaide and I love the scene, even though I prob do not get much opportunity to get out as much . We are very committed to sourcing local talent to play with us . Baby Teeth last year, Fridge Junkies this year. I see a lot of old faces around the place too , and I like the fact they are still playing and in it for the right reasons , there's no gold watch at the end of a career or service in music , so you better be in it for the right reasons !

Out of your 4 albums! What is your favourite songs to play live and what songs have you notice get the audience pumped! Sarah's voice these days has such a strong timber, she has to be one of the best vocalists in Australia right now! Has playing large volumes of shows really built this?

We have been blessed to still be in the industry, foremost ,and along with that we have the benefit of playing songs from our career over the past few decades. I particularly love festivals because the demographic is so diverse. So when we play DOWN AGAIN or something like SHUT MY EYES, I see certain people rise up. Same with the new songs with a new demographic. Its great and a lot of this latest tour we are seeing families coming out which is unreal. I love the new album and playing the new songs, just as much as the old. I dont have one in particular, but i do love DOWN AGAIN .

So, Stu, what's next for the Superjesus, surely there's plenty more petrol in the tank for band, do you wanna go overseas again, play bigger shows, tours or maybe start making some local appearances around Adelaide and pack the venues to the rafters?!?!

We are heading to New Zealand next week to continue the self titled album tour, and we have some interest back overseas also which we are looking into as we speak, so yes there is plenty on our plate. We are looking at 2026 atm , and yes all of the above ! Festivals /OS/ home gigs, new recordings. We will be around the place somewhere over the next 12 months or so , I  can guarantee that !!
